DIY Play Dough with Essential Oils

Play Clay, not just for Kids!

Here is a fun, hands-on project for you and your children during summer break.  Take some time and help them create something.  Let them pick out their favorite essential oil to add to the dough.  Pick out your own and have a stress ball with an essential oil that will be aromatically pleasant for you.  The options are endless!

Ingredients

• 2 cups flour
• 1 cup salt
• 2 tsp cream of tartar
• 1 tbsp oil
• 2 cups cold water
• Essential oils, your choice
• food coloring, optional

Directions

Mix flour, salt, cream of tartar, oil, and water in a medium saucepan.  Stir over medium heat for about 5 minutes, until dough has reached the right consistency.  Let cool, split into 3 balls, and knead in essential oils and optional food coloring until it is distributed evenly throughout each ball of dough.  Store in an airtight container.

What essential oils to select?

There are so many essential oils in your Everyday Oils Collection that you received with your Premium Starter Kit, where do you start?

If you do have the Everyday Oils Collection, you have the following oils: Frankincense, Lemon Vitality, Lavender, Tea Tree, Peppermint Vitality, Joy, Purification, PanAway, Thieves Vitality, and Stress Away.   You can use them individually or make a blend for your dough.

Which essential oil you use will depend on what aroma therapy you are looking for.  Lavender is good for relaxing, winding down, or creating a calming environment.  Peppermint has an energizing scent that can help you jump start your day.  Lemon is refreshing.  Frankincense is grounding.  Purification is a blend for a fresh scent.  Stress Away is a blend that could help induce relation and take away tension to have a calming impact.

Custom blends can also be used for aroma therapy.   If you are looking for Focus, try equal parts of Peace & Calming, Valor, Cedarwood, Vetiver, and Lavender.  Want a pick-me-up in the morning?  Try Orange and Peppermint.

These diffuser recipes can be modified for play dough too!

There isn’t a wrong answer when it comes to adding essential oils.  If you like the scent, use it.  If your child likes the scent, they will be more likely to use the play dough and enjoy the aroma.

Young Living Blog has another version of Play Dough (HERE).  This one is definitely kid-friendly and will keep your child busy for hours this summer.  It uses only two ingredients, cornstarch and either KidScents lotion or Lavender Conditioner.

DIY Stain Remover Stick

Young Living is so good to me! They continuously share great recipes to help remove toxic chemicals from my family’s life. My daughter and I were recently talking about a stain remover stick she had used while on a field trip with school and I said that I would check Pinterest to see if I could find an essential oils recipe that could be used.

I open my email today and there is an email from the Young Living Blog with a recipe for DIY stain remover sticks!  If you’d like to see the original post, check it out HERE.

If you just want the recipe, I have cut/paste it below.  If you have other ways that you use Essential Oils in your laundry, please comment below.  I’d love to hear what you do!

DIY stain remover with essential oils

 Ingredients

• 1 bar solid castile soap, unscented, shaved into small pieces
• 1/3 cup washing soda
• 2 tablespoons white distilled vinegar
• ½ cup water
• 2 tablespoons Thieves® Laundry Soap
• 4 drops Lemon essential oil
• Empty deodorant container
• Empty lip balm container

Instructions

1. Add all ingredients except for the essential oil and laundry soap into a saucepan.
2. Heat on low until the soap and all the particles are mostly melted.
3. Remove from the heat.
4. Add Thieves laundry soap and essential oil and evenly mix.
5. Let cool slightly and empty the mixture into a ziplock bag.
6. Cut the corner off and squeeze the liquid into your containers.
7. Put on the lids, let completely cool.
8. Lightly dampen stick with a wet washcloth before use to adequately spread around the stained area.
9. Wash as you normally would.

DIY Lotion Bars and Sugar Scrubs

Are you looking for something easy to make with your Young Living Essential Oils?  These are the recipes for you!  The coconut oil that I have used is the cold pressed, large tub from Costco!  I also purchased my olive oil and avocado oil from Costco too!    You may already have these at home so you can start right away!

This sugar scrub is awesome for the winter or whenever you just need to think of summer and the beach.  The coconut and lime combo just makes me feel like sun and suntan lotion!

Silicone mini cupcake pans are the best for lotions.  Once they harden, you can just pop them out.  Mini cupcake size seems to be perfect to hold for after your shower, in my opinion.
